The GenrePlex

The GenrePlex is a method of classifying the subtle blend of genres that make up a movie. Rather than stating that a movie is a ‘Romantic, Comedy,’ it allows for quantifying how romantic and how comedic the movie is; and in addition it allows for specifying whether there are hints of any other genres, maybe Crime or Action. The GenrePlex sectors are laid out purposefully such that a quick glance gives an overall feel for the style of the movie. It is based around two axes: Realism (horizontal) and Weight (vertical). So the more colour at the top, the more light-hearted the movie is; the more at the bottom, the heavier it is. Similarly, the more colour on the left, the more surreal the movie is, and the more on the right, the more realistic it is. This is not an exact science, but it gives a much better idea of what a movie will be like than traditional fixed categories. The GenrePlex for a given movie would be the aggregate of viewers’ opinions, in the same way that movie ratings are. Having movies classified in this way would allow for better searching and recommendations for movie services like LoveFilm and Netflix, as well as deeper analysis of trends and targeted marketing campaigns. Below are some examples…

Sixth Sense a dark supernatural mix of real and surreal

Jaws moderately heavy realism with some lighter moments

WALL-E light-hearted character-driven animated sci-fi

Total Recall heavy surreal futuristic sci-fi

Jerry Maguire light-hearted romantic realism

Fight Club heavy psychological gritty blend of real and surreal
